Technology - Time Savers Or Time Wasters?

You're answering a voice mail message when you get a notice that a text message has arrived. Sitting in front of your computer, your mail icon indicates receipt of a new email while your IM screen pops open. What to respond to first? Is this a typical day? Unfortunately, most likely it is.

As we struggle to stay up with the various communication options available, many people feel they are wasting more time than they are saving, due to constant interruptions. Technology creates immediacy. Before we decide to stomp on our cell phone or smash the computer, let's look at some ways to incorporate a little structure, letting the technology work for us instead of against us.

VOICE MAIL
Be sure that your voice mail message asks for the caller to leave a detailed message. That should be a given, but how often do you get a message that says, "Hi. Give me a call; I have a question."? So you call back, and they aren't available. You can't leave a response because you don't know why you're calling. So the phone tag begins. If they had stated the question, you could have called back with the answer and most likely the process would have ended at that point.

When you are leaving a message, give enough detail that the person can properly. If information must be researched first, they will complete that task before responding, again saving both of you a lot of call-backs and getting nothing accomplished.

Make it a habit to return calls on the same business day if at all possible. If someone is waiting for your answer, it is courteous and professional to get back with them as soon as possible. If you have a policy of response time, state it in our voice mail message so the caller will know when to expect to hear from you...within 24 hours, the next business day, etc.

EMAIL
Here is a scenario that happens consistently with most everyone I know: You are working at your desk and the little envelope appears, or your computer 'dings' (or both). Mail has arrived. Hurry up and check it! This interruption can take just a minute, or enough of them can consume your day. If you just can't ignore these notifications, turn off the audio and the envelope icon.

I've heard from business associates that they read their emails only 2 or 3 times a day. Some choose first thing in the morning and after lunch. Others check their mail mid-morning, after lunch and mid-afternoon. Their theory is that waiting until mid-morning rather than reading emails right away allows them to address immediate needs before attending to the emails, plus they'll still have time to answer this correspondence before lunch, providing a timely response.

Try a few different times and see what works best for you. Reading and responding to emails in blocks rather than continually throughout the day will prevent a lot of interruptions and provide for a more focused work day. I heard at a seminar years ago that each interruption causes a loss of 15-30 minutes before you're back functioning at the level you had achieved prior to the break in concentration. Think of how many times your email causes this!

Another of my articles, titled "24 Hours A Day Is All We Get", discusses handling interruptions and the 3-options process. We can do the same with email - throw it away (delete), file it (save to a folder for future reference) or answer it (then file it or delete it).

NEWSLETTERS
Email newsletters arrive daily. Some are extremely educational, others informational, and still others just a nuisance. You have total control over this, and it's as easy as clicking "Unsubscribe" to the email newsletters you have no interest in receiving.

I receive a lot of newsletters from fellow members of Rainmakers, a networking organization (www.gorainmakers.com). I like to get them because it's a quick, monthly reminder to refer business to them, and it helps me stay up with changes in their businesses, new products, new employees, etc. I will scan the headlines, and if nothing draws my interest, I delete it, at a cost of less than a minute of my time. If there is an item of interest, I choose to take the time to review the article.

The web is filled with sites explaining why your business needs to have an online presence. I think by now everyone has figured out that the web is a wonderful, powerful advertising medium. The new web is a social phenomenon, not a technical one. The Internet is opening up avenues of instant communication that allow people everywhere to see, hear, and share with each other any time they want. The personal website is the front porch in a new online society where you welcome up friends and neighbors for a sit and a chat in the evenings. It's the fence you lean on in the afternoon to talk gossip and share recipes. It's the living room you hold your Cub Scout meetings in as well as where you post the latest pine wood derby results. It's even a refrigerator door where you post A+ papers next to crayon masterpieces for all the family to see.

High speed internet has been getting speedier over the last couple of years. It seems every couple of months there is a new report in the news about a new internet medium 100 times faster than ADSL. So why do we need faster internet? Mainly for commercial purposes and the die hard internet geeks that can' wait that extra millisecond for their page to load up.

With high speed internet the main restriction is the download limit. When you give users that kind of speed they will be downloading a lot more data hence download limits need to be raised. When you raise the download limit the price of the service goes up dramatically. There has to be a middle ground in between download limits and pricing.

Cable internet is also a good broadband connection. Cable internet runs on a separate cable, as the name suggests, rather than running on a phone line. This increases reliability because it is not running on the same lines as land line phone services or pay tv.

High speed internet is good to have, but anything more than the current speed is a little over kill for our present needs as consumers.

Solving Computer Science Algorithms

When I was a student, lots of my fellow students approached me and asked "Where do you start to solve a computer science problem?" A question could typically be something like "write an algorithm to calculate..." I hope the following will give a good starting point and building block to get you on the road to solving the problem.

Let's work through an example. You get the question to write an algorithm or program to solve "Pascal's Triangle". The question might be something like "The user will enter a row number, and then the program must calculate and display the elements of that row in the Pascal Triangle"

Pascal's triangle is a geometric arrangement of the binomial coefficients in a triangle. In plain English this can be explained as "every number in the triangle is the sum of the two numbers above". The number Zero is always invisible to the left and right of the triangle's edges. To read more about Pascal's Triangle, search for "Pascal's Triangle" in Wikipedia.

Here are the first few rows of Pascal's Triangle: (The triangle starts with Row 0 and each row starts with element 0 from left to right)

Now, to solve this in an algorithm / program, there are always 4 basic ways to approach the problem. The 4 approaches are here listed from generally easiest to advanced, and also generally from worst to best.

1) Hard Coding

2) Iterative

3) Recursive

4) Function

Lets look at all 4:

Hard Coding

The hard-coded solution is a silly solution! Bad programming! To solve the problem with hard coding, we will store each row as a variable/memory structure and then when required, we return that specific row. Only use this method if you are writing an exam and you are seriously running out of time!

Iterative

The iterative approach is in most cases the "model answer". This is generally a good solid solution. The solution is easy to write, and also easy for someone to understand when reading the code.

We will start with hard-coding only the first row. Then we will iterate calculating through the rows until we are at the required row. For Pascal's triangle, our algorithm will loop until the required row. Each subsequent row is calculated by using the values from the previously calculated row.

Recursive

The recursive solution is normally the "higher grade" solution. It is something that is not always understood by students. I used to call this the "job security" solution. Computer Scientists enjoy this solution.

With the recursive solution we will use a function to return each element of the required row. The function will call itself to calculate the answer by calling the same function (recursively). Each time the function is called, it will return "1" if it is the first element of the row, otherwise it will return the sum of the two elements above it.

Function

The Function is normally the best and fasted approach. It could however be very difficult to work out a formula. With a formula we want to say:

f(r,e) = some formula

where r = row number and e = element number.

For Pascal's Triangle there is a formula! nCr or n! / (r! * (n-r)!)

where n = row number and r = element number.

So, our algorithm will call this function with the row- and element numbers as parameters and displayed the return value.

That's it! Problem solved.

New SMS-Chat Threads Messages

If iPhone has proved anything, it's that there are a lot of what Robin Williams would call nose miners out there who enjoy using their index fingers for navigation among other things. It's what I'd call a picky bunch. If you are a Windows Mobile person who feels deprived, you will be glad to know that there is a whole suite of software introduced by Vito Technology that employs finger push navigation similar to the iPhone.

The latest release is SMS-Chat. If you are a Palm Treo packer, you already appreciate the virtues of threaded SMS messages and the convenience of having your messages all grouped together. That's what SMS-Chat will do for you. It opens up a whole new world for SMS organization and manipulation. But threading is not the only feature of SMS-Chat.

From within this application, you can easily delete, forward, resend messages, and add new contacts. You can also send the same message to multiple recipients, which I appreciate greatly.

When you invoke the program, all of your chats are listed in the main menu under the name of a recipient. You can scroll up or down the list using your finger to make the list glide like an air hockey puck. Select any entry and the whole thread of in and out messages involving that person appears. Tap on any message, a menu appears, and you can choose to delete, forward, resend, or cancel the message.

From the main, opening screen, tap the icon in the lower left of the screen to bring up a menu with the following options: About, Help, Language, Minimize, Exit, and Cancel.

To send a new message to a person in the list, select a name and just start entering text into the blue input panel at the bottom of the screen. When you're done, tap the envelop in the lower right corner, the message is launched, and a copy appears in the thread.

To initiate a new message to a new person, just tap on the icon with the pencil and envelop in the lower left corner and choose from the contact list. Your contact list will pop up in a new finger scrollable view, which makes it fun, but if your list is very long, you will soon grow weary scrolling and may wish to start typing in the person's name and let the predictive engine find it for you.

I was prepared to complain about the single line, blue input panel, but I soon discovered that it expands as you type to accommodate your text.

However, I am amazed that such a savvy developer as Vito would neglect to put in a character counter when the count is critical and there is a strict 160 character limit per message. I certainly hope a counter will be included in the next release.

I think it would be wonderful too if there were various ways that you could organize messages into groups by various criteria such as subject, date, recipients, color coding and so forth. Perhaps down the road Vito will make this possible too.

Depress the three bar red icon in the upper right corner of the screen to bring up a menu for adding recipients (as many as you wish), viewing contact information, deleting the chat, or cancelling the operation.

Push the arrow in the upper left, and you go back to the scrollable list of messages. And that, my friends, takes us back to where we started and completes the tour. Please be sure not to leave any of your valuables behind as you exit the vehicle.

SMS-Chat couldn't be simpler or more elegant, and it certainly adds important, missing functionality that has been seriously lacking in the Windows Mobile texting platform.

If you want to add this slick, new application to your pocket pal, just go to Vito's new http://iwindowsmobile.com site and download it. Try it out for 14 days free, kick the tires, and if you want to make it a permanent fixture, it will cost you $14.95. Be aware that Vito is very rigid about allowing only one license per application per installation. I tried to install it on a couple of my devices to test it, and I was out of luck. But that's only fair.

Note that this version only works on Windows Mobile 5/6 Classic and Professional models. If you have a Smartphone or Standard model, you are out of luck, which is just another reason not to have a non-touch screen device as far as I'm concerned.

It was long ago when we heard our parents or grandparents used to spend numerous hours of the day being occupied with nature. But today's people have been preoccupied with technology, which has rather been for good or bad. The emerging high-speed computers, cell-phones and two-way messengers have made the world ahead of us few generations. Gadgets that were once only available to few Intelligence personnel or prestigiously positioned person are seen today in the hands of a high school pupil. The data is merely entered on a device and you screen calculations in colourful graphical format. In this era all possible manual work has gone to the edge and electronic notepads have become the need. But a question rises here, is technology helping the youth of today or taking from us our intellectual power?

The early computers when introduced were of a shape of a whole room. Now they very simple fit into a school bag and even your trousers pockets. The necessity of the technology has become so intense that many colleges are even beginning to require students to have a personal electronic notebook.

A study reveals that around ninety percent of people ages 5 to 17 use computers and about fifty-nine percent of them are online. Even we see younger kids are happening to become computer savvy. A decade or half ago our parents might haven't had the advantage of today's technology; they never used PDAs and TI-89s and so haven't had online archives, libraries, databases, which would connect them to the rest of the world.

With the blessing of this online connectivity the level of today's youth mental power has dropped down that using much less of their own intellect and doing more cutting and pasting with the click of a mouse. Most of the schools and colleges and even universities' students are the prey of plagiarism and are merely limiting the brilliant use of their own brains. Today's youth tend to delay their homework and projects until the night before the task is due. They have a simple one click solution to their problem and that is copying someone else's time and hard work.

For educational organizations they must modify their teachings slightly and lead teens to struggle a bit on their own basis coming up with their own ideas and just taking assistance from others work rather than owning that. The technology is introduced as a tool to let you enhance your own abilities supported by own beliefs and thinking, not to steal someone else's. What has the internet done to help students who aren't looking to take someone else's idea? Online libraries give us access to resources we may have never had any other way.

In our parents time everything they did was worked out with a pen on a piece of paper. So we've covered the internet and calculators in an educational sense, but what about the aspect of technology and entertainment with today's youth? Long gone and the summers spent entirely outdoors. With the invention of new technology and game consoles and many others devices, today's youth are trading fun-in-the-sun for hours spent in front of a monitor or television screen. You will find younger children having such facilities even in automobiles.

Many may look at these games as a waste of time, but they could be very educational as well. Numerous gaming companies are looking to put more educational aspects into their games. These high action games can also enhance your hand-eye coordination drastically. In this connection a very interesting quote from a former president Ronald Reagan goes as: "Video games could do more a lot than just wastage of time which many of us think that way. Many young people have developed incredible hand, eye and brain coordination in playing these games. The air force believes these kids will be our outstanding pilots should they fly our jets."
